Do part-time employees have to compensate for public holidays?

Public holidays are equivalent to Sundays and do not have to be compensated if they fall on a working day of a part-time employee. This means that the public holiday is work-free.

The wage entitlement for this day depends on the employment contract. Anyone who works on an hourly or daily wage is only entitled to a salary – except on 1 August – if this is regulated in the employment contract or is customary in the company. Employees on a monthly salary are entitled to paid public holidays.

The lost working time does not have to be made up, and conversely there is no right to additional pay for public holidays that fall on a non-working day.
