Vouchers can be limited in time

Contrary to popular belief, vouchers can be limited in time. If a voucher is issued with a validity period expressly limited to one year and entitles the holder to select a specific product within one year of the issue date, then it is time-barred if it is not redeemed.

The District Court of Zurich had a voucher with a one-year validity period in its possession, which was not redeemed. The plaintiff demanded redemption despite the expired deadline, which was rejected by the court. The reasoning: the contractual provision was clear and permissible and therefore the claim was forfeited. (Source: Zurich District Court, judgment dated 10.12.22)).
