Is a charging station for electric cars tax deductible?

The costs of installing a charging station for electric cars are tax-deductible in many cantons, but only under certain conditions:
- As a measure to preserve value: if the charging station is installed as part of renovations or energy efficiency improvements, the costs can often be deducted from taxable income as property maintenance costs.
- Energy-efficient renovation: Some cantons and the federal government promote energy efficiency measures. Charging stations are often considered part of such measures.
- Not deductible as a private purchase: If the charging station is installed purely for private use without any connection to the property, it is generally not deductible.
- In some cantons, the requirement is that the system must be bidirectional. In other words, it must not only be used to refuel the vehicle, but also be integrated into a photovoltaic solution for the property, in which the car battery can also be used as an energy storage device.
As regulations vary from canton to canton, it is worth checking the cantonal tax information.
