Hiring domestic help: these are the duties

In Switzerland, the employment of domestic help is associated with certain obligations:

  1. The employer must take out accident insurance for the domestic help.
  2. Registration with the cantonal compensation office: Contributions to old-age and survivors’ insurance (AHV) amounting to 10.6% and unemployment insurance (ALV) amounting to 2.2% of the gross salary are due. These contributions are paid half by the employer and half by the employee. The compensation fund provides sample forms.
  3. Family allowances: under certain circumstances, family allowances of CHF 200 to CHF 300 per child per month may be payable. This is the case if the domestic help or their spouse does not receive family allowances.
  4. Pay slip: A monthly pay slip must be drawn up showing the relevant deductions.
  5. Salary statement: A salary statement must be issued at the end of the calendar year.
