Deferral of the withdrawal of vested benefits

Deferral of the withdrawal of vested benefits

The withdrawal of vested benefits policies and vested benefits accounts after reaching the reference age can only be deferred if you are still gainfully employed. In this case, deferral is possible until the end of employment, for a maximum of five years.

However, the Federal Council has decided to introduce a transitional provision: people who would have to draw their retirement benefits in the years 2024-2029 because they have reached or already exceeded the reference age and who are no longer gainfully employed can defer payment of these vested benefits until 31 December 2029, but for a maximum of five years after reaching the reference age.

The following points must therefore be taken into account when drawing vested benefits:

  • Retirement benefits from vested benefits policies and vested benefits accounts can be drawn from five years before reaching the reference age.
  • As with pillar 3a, the retirement benefit is generally due when you reach the reference age, unless you are still in gainful employment, in which case you can defer it until the end of your employment, for a maximum of five years.
  • During a transitional period until 31 December 2029, the drawing of vested benefits can still be deferred even without gainful employment, whereby the maximum deferral is possible in individual cases up to five years after reaching the reference age.
